Are Penis Pumps Waterproof?

The definition of waterproof would lead you to believe that an item cannot be damaged by exposure to water at all. However, waterproofing when used to describe devices comes with a few caveats to keep in mind. All of our Typhoon Penis Pumps resist water ingress to the IPX7 standard, but what does that actually mean? This quick guide will teach you all you need to know about what companies and manufacturers really mean when they say a product is “waterproof”.

What does IP mean?

In short, IP is an abbreviation for Ingress Protection and is used to indicate how well a device is protected against water and dust. As defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission, the IP code also extends to intrusion and accidental contact.

The structure of an IP code is as follows:

  • IP - Ingress Protection
  • First digit - Solid particle protection, 0-6 or X
  • Second digit - Liquid ingress protection, 0-9 or X

There are also additional ratings that are optionally used, but are not relevant to the IP ratings used for our penis pumps.

What is IPX7?

The numbers in an IP code determine the strength of protection a device has, with 0 meaning it has no protection and the level of protection increasing with each number. You may be thinking, “what about X?” but this just means that there is no data available to specify a protection rating for that criteria.

You may have also noticed that our pumps do not resist water ingress to the IPX9 standard. IPX7 means that a device is resistant enough to withstand immersion in water 1 meter deep or less for up to 30 minutes, with no harmful water ingress occurring. IPX8 devices can resist water ingress at even further depths, as noted by the manufacturer, and IPX9 devices can resist water ingress and damage from powerful high temperature water jets up to 80°C, both of which are not necessary for our penis pumps.

Summary

Our Typhoon Penis Pumps resist water ingress to the IPX7 standard, meaning that they can withstand up to 30 minutes of immersion in water that is 1 meter deep or less. While they do not offer the same level of protection that a device that resists water ingress to the IPX9 standard, they are completely safe to use while having a shower or bath which is where they are intended to be used.
